Bwejuu Wall - Mafia Island

Estudiantes is one of those places we genuinely love on the Caribbean coast. Despite its name suggesting a spot just for beginners, don't let the "students" moniker fool you; this shallow, sandy patch holds a surprising amount of interest for any diver willing to slow down and look. We’ve finned over this site countless times, often in just 5-8 metres of water, feeling the gentle surge, and every dive reveals something new. It’s the schooling balloonfish that really grab you here. Imagine hundreds of them, all puffed up slightly, drifting together like a living cloud. We haven't seen that anywhere else. Beyond the main attraction, keep your eyes peeled for the flat needlefish hovering just under the surface, or the electric rays tucked into the sand, giving off a subtle glow if you’re lucky. We've also spotted a fair share of slenderjaw and jewel morays peeking from small crevices. Visibility averages around 10 metres, sometimes more, sometimes less, but it’s always calm. It's a great spot for photographers keen on macro subjects, or anyone who just wants a relaxed, easy dive with a few genuine surprises. Our pick? Go mid-morning, before any afternoon breezes pick up.
