FERDINANDO - Kornati Islands

Ferdinando, for us, is a moody old girl, sitting upright and surprisingly intact at 38 metres. She’s a motor vessel, not huge, but with a real sense of history to her. Sunk back in ’72 after catching fire en route from Split to Šibenik, she’s become a home for a good variety of Mediterranean critters. We’ve spent many a no-decompression limit minute finning around her stern, peering into the open holds where conger eels often peek out from shadowy corners. The prop is still there, green with growth, and the deck structure offers plenty of nooks to explore, though penetration is really only for the most experienced and properly equipped. Our favourite is the bow, where schools of small damselfish shimmer above the railings, and sometimes a curious जॉन डोल्फिन will drift by. Visibility can be excellent, particularly outside of summer, painting the wreck in deep blues and greens. She’s a site we’d recommend for anyone comfortable at depth, keen on a proper wreck dive without crazy currents.
