MARIA SERENA - Kornati Islands

Maria Serena isn't a deep dive, which immediately sets it apart in the Kornati. We love that it’s right there, practically waving at you from the surface at a maximum of six metres. The fishing vessel itself, sunk back in '80 after a run-in with a tanker, lies surprisingly intact. You can fin right over the deck, peer into the wheelhouse, and imagine the last moments of its working life. Because it’s so shallow, light filters down beautifully, illuminating schools of damselfish that dart in and out of the rusted superstructure. We've seen moray eels peeking from the nooks and crannies, and quite a few octopuses clinging to the hull, their camouflage almost perfect against the barnacle growth. It’s an easy, relaxed wreck dive, perfect for photographers wanting good light, or anyone just looking for a straightforward exploration without the pressure of depth or complex navigation. Bring a wide-angle lens if you have one, the ambient light here is fantastic.
