MARIJA (PROBABLY) - Split & Central Dalmatia

We’re going to be honest, “Marija (Probably)” is one of those sites that gets its charm from a bit of mystery and a whole lot of history. You’re diving a shallow wreck here, just two metres deep, making it perfect for snorkelers, freedivers, or anyone just starting out with a mask and fins. What we love about the Marija is how accessible it is; it’s practically begging for a leisurely paddle around. The Marija herself is a steamship, sunk by RAF bombs in 1944. Her 27-metre length is spread across the sandy bottom, the metal hull now a textured home for small gobies darting between the plates. You’ll weave through ribs of rusted metal, observing the way sunlight warps through the water, creating patterns on the barnacle-encrusted remains. It’s not about huge pelagics here; it's about the intricate details. Look for crabs scuttling from under an ancient boiler, or a curious octopus peeking from a shadowed corner. Our favourite time to visit is early morning, before any boat traffic kicks up the sand, when the light is soft and the water still.
