Wreck Stomarica - Split & Central Dalmatia

The Stomarica wreck, near Split, is one of our favourites for a relaxed afternoon dive, especially when the maestral wind keeps the sea calm. It’s a fishing boat, maybe 20-25 metres long, resting upright on a sandy bottom at around 30 metres. What we love about it is how accessible it feels; the wheelhouse is still largely intact, and you can peer inside, imagining the last moments of its working life. Over the years, the metal hull has become a haven. Schools of glinting damselfish flit in and out of the holds, and we’ve often found scorpionfish nestled in crevices, perfectly camouflaged against the rust. Keep an eye out for conger eels too; they’ve made homes in the deeper sections of the wreck. The visibility here is usually great, often 20 metres plus, making for some lovely photo opportunities as the sunlight filters down. It’s an ideal site for anyone keen on wreck diving without strong currents or deep penetration, perfect for Advanced Open Water divers looking for something a bit different from a reef. We’d suggest going in the late afternoon; the light plays beautifully on the deck then.
