PANAYIOTA (POSSIBLY) - Vis & Biševo

The Panayiota, or what we strongly suspect is the Panayiota, sits just shy of the surface on the northwest side of Vis. It’s a remarkable wreck, especially considering its history. This 68-meter cargo ship ran aground in 1986, and now, almost forty years later, it’s a skeleton of its former self, yet full of character. What we love about this site is the sheer accessibility and the way the light plays through the structure. At just one meter deep, it’s more of a snorkel than a dive, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's boring. We found ourselves circling the collapsed superstructure, mesmerized by the schools of damselfish that dart in and out of the rusted beams. The bow is particularly striking, with remnants of the anchor chain still visible, now draped in green algae. Look closely, and you'll spot small blennies peeking from crevices, and the occasional octopus tucked away in a darker corner. It's a fantastic spot for photographers, especially on a sunny afternoon when the water sparkles. This is our top pick for a relaxed afternoon, perfect for those days when you want to spend hours just floating above a piece of history.
