Cement Wreck - Zakynthos & Ionian Islands

The Cement Wreck, sitting off Zakynthos, is one of those sites we always come back to. It’s not a massive wreck, but it has a real personality. The ship, a small cargo vessel, went down decades ago with a load of cement bags, which have now solidified into a ghostly, undulating landscape around the hull. It gives the whole site an unusual, almost sculptural feel – like the wreck is slowly being swallowed by some strange concrete monster. We love finning through the open holds, feeling the cool shadow as we pass inside. Look closely and you’ll spot octopuses tucked into crevices, their eyes watching you, and schools of damselfish flitting through the beams of light. It’s a great dive for photography, especially on a sunny day when the light plays through the water and off the cement. Our favourite part is exploring the stern, where the propeller still sits, often draped in sponges and small anemones. The site is pretty sheltered, making it a good choice for newer wreck divers or anyone who just wants a relaxed, interesting potter around.
