COMPAGNON - Zakynthos & Ionian Islands

The Compagnon is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to in Zakynthos. She’s a sailing vessel, which instantly gives her a different vibe from your usual fishing boat or cargo ship. We love dropping down and seeing her masts still reaching for the surface, often hazy with schools of damselfish. Sunk in 1980 after a fire, she sits upright at 33 metres, her wooden hull slowly succumbing to the sea. You can often see the scorch marks near the stern, a ghostly reminder of her final moments. We find the bow the most intriguing part, draped in soft corals and home to some surprisingly large groupers that eye you suspiciously from the shadows. The visibility here is usually excellent, so you get a great sense of the whole wreck as you descend. Our advice? Go early in the morning; the light filtering through the mast rigging is pretty special, and you’ll often have the place to yourselves. It’s a dive that rewards careful exploration, great for those who appreciate the history behind a wreck.
