HMS CHAMOIS - Zakynthos & Ionian Islands

We’re big fans of a deep wreck, and the HMS Chamois doesn’t disappoint. This destroyer, sunk in 1904, lies upright at 56 metres and is remarkably intact, especially for a wreck of its age in the Mediterranean. Dropping down, you start to make out the distinct lines of her bow first, then the midsection. The Chamois has become a home for all sorts of creatures – we’ve seen big schools of glasseyes darting through the superstructure, and moray eels peeking out from behind corroded bulkheads. Penetration is possible in a few spots, but this is a serious dive requiring advanced training and gas planning. Our favourite part is exploring the deck guns, still somewhat recognisable, and imagining the scene when her screw pierced the bottom. This site is definitely one for technical divers who appreciate maritime history and the eerie beauty of a well-preserved, deep-water sentinel. Pick a day with minimal current for the best experience; visibility here can be excellent, giving you time to truly absorb the scale of the vessel.
