NECCHIA - Sardinia

The Necchia is a wreck dive we always come back to when we’re in Sardinia. This old motor vessel, sunk off Capo Fano back in the 70s after a run-in with fog and rough seas, sits upright and largely intact at 30 metres. It’s not a huge wreck, about 30 metres long, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in atmosphere and accessibility. We love dropping down onto her deck and seeing the bow point north, almost as if still underway. Entry is usually a calm affair, and the dive itself is pretty straightforward. You can easily spend your bottom time exploring the holds, peering into the superstructure, or just circling the perimeter. Schools of damselfish shimmer around the mast, and we’ve often seen conger eels poking their heads from pipes and crevices. Look closely at the deck plating, and you’ll spot nudibranchs, sometimes even a slipper lobster tucked away. It’s a site that feels lived in by the ocean, with the metal draped in sponges and soft corals. Our favourite part? Peeking into the wheelhouse, imagining the last moments before she went down. It’s a reflective dive, perfect for those who appreciate history and a gentle exploration without strong currents.
