Punta Zanetto - Plane engine - Sardinia

Punta Zanetto’s Plane Engine wreck is more of a curiosity than a grand historical site, but we love it for its sheer peculiarity. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a single, large aircraft engine, likely from an old propeller plane, resting on the seabed. We suspect it’s been there for decades, given the way the local marine life has really made it home. Dropping down, the engine’s shape is still clear, despite the encrustations. Look closely, and you’ll spot a surprising number of critters tucked into its nooks and crannies. We’ve seen octopuses peering out from crevices, moray eels snaking through the cooling fins, and often, schools of damselfish flitting around the propeller shaft. It’s a photographer’s dream if you enjoy macro work or just like something a bit different from your usual Mediterranean reef. The visibility here is usually very good, making for some great wide-angle shots of the engine against the blue. It’s a pretty easy dive, suitable for open water divers, and usually calm, making it a relaxing second dive of the day.
