GAIA (PROBABLY) - Ustica

There’s something particularly compelling about a wreck at recreational depths, and Ustica's Gaia, likely the motor vessel that went down in '65, certainly delivers. Lying in just 9 metres, it’s not about penetration or pushing limits, but rather a relaxed exploration of history and the vibrant life that’s made it home. We love taking our time here, drifting over the main deck, observing the schools of damselfish that shimmer above the metal. The sheer size of her, 55.8 metres, gives plenty to explore even at this shallow depth. You’ll find moray eels peeking from beneath plates, small groupers eyeing you from shadowed nooks, and often octopus camouflaged against the rust. It’s an ideal second dive, or a great spot for newer divers to experience a proper wreck without the pressure of deep water or strong currents. Our favourite aspect is the way the light plays on the structure, especially around midday, illuminating the hull and drawing out the colours of the sponges and algae. It’s a gentle, reflective dive, perfect for photographers wanting to capture the blend of human history and natural reclamation.
