FLORIDA - Algarve & Berlengas

The Florida wreck, resting at 26 metres, isn't just another chunk of metal on the seabed. This is a genuinely dangerous wreck, and that's precisely why we love it. There's a palpable sense of history here, a real weight to the experience. We're talking about a trawler that went down suddenly, leaving her cargo of ceramic roof tiles scattered across the seafloor. You can still spot them, a ghostly trail leading away from the hull. What makes Florida so compelling is the way nature has reclaimed it. The ship’s superstructure is a haven for all sorts of critters. We've seen schools of juvenile barracuda shimmering around the mast, and the interior spaces, though tight in places, are often home to grumpy conger eels peering out from shadowed corners. Our favourite part has to be the deck, now completely draped in colourful anemones and sponges. It’s a photographer's dream if you’re careful with your buoyancy. This site suits experienced divers who appreciate wrecks with a bit of a story and aren't afraid of a current. Go early in the morning for the best light penetration and fewer divers.
