With 116+ marine species recorded in the area - including blue sharks, blue whales, dolphins, dwarf minke whales and ocean sunfish (mola mola) - Pedra do Avião offers some of Algarve & Berlengas's richest wreck diving. Water ranges 15-19°C, warmest June, October, November.
Pedra do Avião is definitely one for the more experienced divers among us. Dropping to a solid 34 metres, it's a deep one, and the currents here can be unpredictable, so good buoyancy control is key. We've often found decent-sized groupers lurking in the shadows, and the occasional sunfish might glide past if you're lucky. It's not a site that screams with colour, but the rock formations themselves have a stark beauty, offering interesting swim-throughs and overhangs to explore. Come here for the challenge and the chance of spotting some bigger pelagics, rather than intricate reef scenes.
