There’s a real chill that runs through you when you drop onto a U-boat. The U-442, sunk in 1942, sits deep enough off the Algarve coast that you really feel the history pressing down. You’ll find it upright and mostly intact, a ghostly shadow on the seabed. We love the way the conning tower still stands proud, encrusted in jewel anemones and home to thick schools of sardines that shimmer like liquid silver as you approach. Exploring the deck, you’ll spot resident conger eels peeking from torpedo tubes, their heads swaying slightly in the gentle current. The hatches are open, inviting a careful penetration for those qualified and experienced in overhead environments, though we’d always suggest a guide here. Our favourite detail? The sheer scale of it, the way the light fades the deeper you go, giving the whole experience a profound, almost reverent feel. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history as much as marine life, a sobering yet beautiful encounter. Expect good visibility on calmer days, but always be mindful of the depth and the potential for stronger currents further down.
