BRAGANZA - Northumberland & Northeast

The Braganza, a steamship that went down in 1869 after colliding with the SS Jerome, lies at a respectable 42 meters off the Northumberland coast. We usually drop onto a largely intact hull, sometimes finding the bow rising a few meters from the seabed, still looking purposeful. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery here, but on a good day, the structure emerges from the gloom, draped in plumose anemones and dead man’s fingers. Look for the resident lobsters tucked into any available crevice; they’re often quite large. It’s a dive for those comfortable with deeper wrecks and the cooler North Sea temperatures, offering a solid glimpse into maritime history, colonised by some hardy invertebrate life.
