CASTLE DAWN - Northumberland & Northeast

Castle Dawn, resting upright at 21 metres, feels like stepping back in time. We love how intact she is, a proper fishing vessel from bow to stern, not just a pile of rubble. You can often make out the wheelhouse structure, and the winches are still there on deck, draped in green algae and anemones. Our favourite part is dropping down through the often-murky green water onto the deck; the sudden appearance of the vessel is always dramatic. We’d suggest bringing a good torch, not just for peering inside the more open sections of the holds, but also to bring out the colour of the jewel anemones and dead man’s fingers that coat every surface. The currents here can be a bit frisky, so we prefer to hit it on a neap tide for a more relaxed exploration. Keep an eye out for inquisitive wrasse and pollock darting through the superstructure. It’s a dive that rewards careful navigation and an appreciation for the region’s maritime history.
