CLAVERING (PART OF) - Northumberland & Northeast

The Clavering, what’s left of her anyway, sits in a very exposed spot just off Beadnell. We love this site for its history and just how much of that history you can still feel when you’re down there. Built in 1888, she was a steamship carrying pitch and iron from Middlesbrough to London before she ran aground. Today, you’re diving a very broken-up wreck, but don't let that put you off. It’s shallow, only 7 metres, so you get plenty of bottom time to really nose around. We always find the most interesting bits are the large iron plates and ribs scattered across the seabed; they’ve become home to an amazing collection of critters. Look closely in the crevices and under the overhangs for blennies and gobies. The remains of her three boilers are always a highlight, standing proud amongst the wreckage. There’s a quiet satisfaction in seeing the triple expansion engine's single shaft, a testament to her working life. It’s a great dive for macro enthusiasts and anyone who enjoys piecing together a story from scattered remains. Just be mindful of the conditions; it can get surgey here, so pick a calm day.
