CONISBRO CASTLE (POSSIBLY) - Northumberland & Northeast

The Conisbro Castle, possibly, is a wreck that always sparks conversation. We’re still not 100% on the name, but that just adds to the adventure when you’re down there, imagining its story. Dropping onto the deck at 17 metres, you’re greeted by a solid old fishing vessel, upright and relatively intact for a wreck that went down in ‘58. We love how the strong North Sea currents have scrubbed parts of her clean, exposing rivet lines and the sturdy framework, while other areas are completely carpeted in anemones – a real patchwork of bare metal and soft coral. Our favourite time to dive Conisbro Castle is on a slack tide, ideally just before high water. That’s when the visibility often opens up, letting you really appreciate the scale of the wreck. Look for the resident wolfish tucked into crevices, their watchful eyes following you, and the schools of saithe that often swirl around the mast structure. It’s a dive for those who appreciate history and the rugged beauty of a North Sea wreck, not one for delicate coral gardens. You can penetrate parts of the wheelhouse, if you're comfortable, adding another layer to the exploration. Expect the water to be cool, even in summer, so a drysuit is definitely our recommendation.
