COUNSELLOR III - Northumberland & Northeast

The Counsellor III is a proper expedition, a big steamship lying in a relatively easy depth for its scale. We’re talking about a 120-meter vessel, a real leviathan on the seabed, and it’s always humbling to think about her last moments back in 1940. The sheer size means you’re not just seeing a wreck; you’re exploring a landscape. Our favourite dives here are when the visibility holds, letting you trace the outline of her massive boilers and the triple expansion engine. It’s a dark site, and the scale can feel a bit overwhelming at first, but that’s part of the thrill. Expect to share the space with cod lurking in the shadows, big edible crabs tucked into crevices, and sometimes a ling eel peeking from a hull plate. We’d suggest a strong torch is essential, not just for peering inside, but for appreciating the colours that still cling to the steel. This isn't a dive for the easily spooked or those new to wrecks, but for experienced divers who appreciate history and a bit of industrial archaeology, it’s a brilliant day out. The sheer tonnage makes it feel like you’re diving a submerged factory floor.
