CRESCENT - Northumberland & Northeast

The Crescent is one of those sites we always recommend to newer divers wanting to try a proper wreck. It’s shallow, only seven metres at its deepest, and the remains of this old barge are spread out, making it easy to navigate. We particularly love the feeling of swimming over the scattered timbers; it really evokes that sense of history, thinking about its journey ending back in 1871. You won't find towering structures here, but rather a fascinating debris field that’s become a home for a surprising amount of life. Look closely amongst the twisted metal and wooden planks, and you'll spot blennies darting into crevices, crabs scuttling sideways, and sometimes a curious little conger eel peeking out. The light penetration is fantastic at this depth, painting the greens and browns of the kelp in vivid colours, especially on a sunny day. It’s a gentle introduction to wreck diving, letting you get comfortable with overhead environments without feeling claustrophobic, and it’s an excellent spot for photographers keen on macro subjects or wide-angle shots that capture the atmospheric light.
