CROIS BHRIDE - Northumberland & Northeast

Crois Bhride isn't about depth; it's about history right under your nose. This old fishing vessel, driven ashore by a gale back in '76, now lies broken just outside Port St Mary's inner breakwater. At a maximum of one meter, we're talking about a snorkel or a free-dive at low tide. We love that you can see the bones of her, scattered timbers and hull plates, all encrusted with sea anemones and a surprising amount of weed. It's a real lesson in how quickly the sea reclaims things. Look closely between the ribs and you’ll find blennies darting, crabs scuttling amongst the rocks she’s become part of, and sometimes even a small conger eel tucked into a crevice. It’s less a dive and more an intimate exploration of a wreck's skeleton, perfect for a calm day when you just want to potter about near shore. Our favourite way to experience it is with a mask and snorkel, drifting over the remains, letting the gentle swell push you along while you pick out the details of her demise. It’s a gentle reminder of the sea’s power and the resilience of marine life.
