CRUSADER - Northumberland & Northeast
The Crusader is a feisty little wreck, and we love it for a quick, uncomplicated dive when the weather’s playing nice. Sunk after hitting something unseen in 1978, she went down in a hurry, leaving behind an 8.8-metre fishing vessel now settling into the seabed at 14 metres. It’s not a huge wreck, so you’re not going to get lost in vast cargo holds. Instead, think of it as a compact playground for nudibranchs, squat lobsters, and those curious little wrasse that dart in and out of the plating. We often find conger eels tucked into the tightest spots, their heads poking out with surprising indifference as you glide past. The hull itself is slowly collapsing, creating interesting little overhangs and crevices that are just begging for a torch beam. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in the North Sea, but on a good day, the Crusader takes on a greenish, ethereal glow. Our pick for timing is usually around slack water on a neap tide, which gives you the calmest conditions to poke around without fighting too much flow. She’s a great choice for divers who appreciate the subtle beauty of a small wreck and enjoy spotting the smaller critters that call it home.
