DURHAM COAST - Northumberland & Northeast

The Durham Coast, sitting at a comfortable 7m, is our pick for a leisurely wreck dive with a decent story attached. We love how accessible it is, perfect for knocking out two dives in a day, especially when the weather is playing ball. This steamship met its end in a collision back in '24, and while it's classified as "dangerous," that refers more to surface navigation than what you'll find below. The site itself is pretty spread out, bits of structure rising just enough to give a sense of its former bulk. You'll find sections of hull plating, twisted beams, and engine parts, all heavily encrusted with dead man's fingers and colourful anemones. Look closely in the nooks and crannies; we've often spotted wrasse darting between the metal and crabs scuttling over the rust. It’s a site that rewards slow exploration, letting your eyes adjust to the subtle forms and the life that now thrives on them. Best dived on a slack tide, obviously, to really take your time poking around.
