ECLIPSE - Northumberland & Northeast

The Eclipse is a little slice of history, sitting flat on the seabed just off Egremont. We love it because, for such a shallow wreck, it offers a real sense of discovery. Built of wood back in 1863, she foundered at anchor during a gale in 1890, and time has taken its toll, but the remains are still very much there. You’ll find timbers scattered and ribs poking up, creating fantastic nooks and crannies for crabs and lobsters. Our favourite part is carefully sifting through the silt – we’ve often found old bottles and pottery shards, little tangible connections to her past. It’s a gentle dive, perfect for those wanting to explore a proper wreck without the demands of depth or strong currents. Visibility can be a bit variable here, so we always check local reports, but even in murkier conditions, poking around the timbers with a torch feels wonderfully atmospheric. Keep an eye out for dogfish tucked under the larger sections; they’re often snoozing there.
