EIDSIVA - Northumberland & Northeast

Diving the Eidsiva off the Northumberland coast is like stepping into a cold, murky time capsule. This isn't a deep dive, barely two metres at high tide, but what it lacks in depth it more than makes up for in atmosphere. We love coming here when the light is just right, filtering through the surface chop and illuminating the wreck’s skeletal remains. You’re swimming over the stern, where the triple expansion engine and single boiler are still remarkably intact, despite the waves that constantly crash over them. Look closely and you’ll find crabs scuttling amongst the twisted metal and thick kelp, while small coalfish dart through the shadowy spaces. It’s a site for those who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a challenge with entry and exit, especially if there's any swell. The Eidsiva ran aground carrying coal from the Tyne to Rouen in 1907, and you can still feel that sense of maritime history. Our favourite part is navigating the engine room, a tight squeeze but incredibly rewarding, with light shafts cutting through the gloom. It’s a shallow wreck, yes, but gives you a proper wreck diving experience without the narcosis. Just be mindful of the currents and plan your dive for slack water; it can get pretty wild out there otherwise.
