EMERALD DAWN - Northumberland & Northeast

The Emerald Dawn, sunk in 2004, is one of our top picks when we’re diving the Northumberland coast. It’s a fishing vessel, a Blue GRP hull with a white wheelhouse forward, sitting upright at 33 metres. You can really feel the cold water hit you as you descend, but the visibility here often surprises people – we’ve seen it push 15 metres on a good day, allowing the whole wreck to come into view. What we love about this wreck is how intact it still is, especially for its age. You can swim into the wheelhouse, seeing where the helmsman would have stood. The stern is a fantastic spot, too; the prop is still there, often covered in dead man’s fingers. The whole wreck has become a haven for life. We always spot wrasse patrolling the decks, and the nooks and crannies are perfect for lobsters. Keep an eye out for ling lurking inside the darker spaces. It’s a solid dive for those comfortable with deeper wrecks in chillier waters, offering a real sense of its past life.
