FLAMINGO - Northumberland & Northeast

The Flamingo, resting just 10 metres deep off Northumberland, is a proper northern wreck dive, full of character. We love the way the iron hull has become a part of the seabed over the decades since she sank in 1886. It’s a site that rewards a slow fin, really taking in the structure and the life that clings to it. You’ll find the single boiler still prominent, a good reference point as you explore. We’ve seen some surprisingly colourful nudibranchs here, tucked away in crevices, and often a decent sized crab peering out from under a plate. Visibility can be a bit variable, as you’d expect in these waters, but on a good day, when the light penetrates, the rusted iron has a beautiful, muted glow. Our pick for timing is always a slack tide, otherwise, you'll be working hard for your views. It's a grand introduction to wreck diving in the UK, especially if you're comfortable with slightly cooler temperatures and don't mind a bit of sediment getting kicked up if you're not mindful of your fins.
