GERTIE - Northumberland & Northeast

Gertie isn't a deep dive, sitting at a comfortable 8 metres, but don't let that fool you into thinking it's simple. This isn't a pristine wreck, not anymore. She’s a working barge that went down with a load of crushed granite in 1930, and the sea has really worked her over. What you get now is a low-lying, spread-out wreck, completely colonised by the local Northumberland life. We love Gertie for her character. You'll find her plates and ribs scattered across the seabed, creating a fantastic habitat for lobsters and crabs. They really do make themselves at home in every nook. On a good day, with a bit of sunlight filtering through the green water, the wreck just glows with sea anemones and dead man's fingers. It's a proper British wreck dive, green and alive. Visibility can be a bit changeable, so we always suggest checking local conditions before heading out. It's an excellent dive for photographers who appreciate the beauty in decay and the tenacity of the sea life here.
