GIRL ANN - Northumberland & Northeast

The Girl Ann wreck isn't just another lump of metal on the seabed, it’s a proper story. This small fishing vessel, just 11 metres long, went down back in '87 while under tow, and she sits upright at 38 metres. We love how intact she is, especially for a wreck in these parts; you can still make out the wheelhouse, the mast, and the winch gear. She’s become a real haven for marine life, especially the nudibranchs – we’ve seen some cracking specimens clinging to the railings and plates. Descending into the green glow, the wreck slowly materialises, a silhouette against the slightly lighter surface. You'll feel the slight chill of the North Sea, but the rewards are worth it. The deck is carpeted with jewel anemones, creating these unexpected bursts of orange and pink. Look into the shadows of the wheelhouse for some decent-sized cod and blennies peering out. This is a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts who appreciate history and don't mind a bit of a current, which can sometimes be strong. We'd suggest aiming for slack water, or as close to it as you can manage, to really take your time exploring her nooks and crannies. It’s a captivating dive that always leaves us wanting to go back.
