GLANCE - Northumberland & Northeast

The Glance isn’t a deep dive, at only three metres, but it’s one we always enjoy when the conditions align. You’ll find her scattered remains, a wooden barge that went down way back in 1903, on the edge of the East Hoyle Bank. We love how the shallow depth transforms the ambient light, casting a hazy, ethereal glow on the timbers, often making you feel like you're diving through history itself. Visibility can be hit or miss, typical for the Northeast, but on a good day, the low depth means plenty of natural light penetrates right to the wreck. What you're really coming for is the atmosphere and the chance to comb through the wooden ribs and hull sections. Look closely and you’ll spot tiny crabs scuttling between the planks and the odd flatfish camouflaged against the sand. We’d suggest timing your dive for slack water, preferably on an incoming tide, to get the clearest conditions and the easiest drift over the site. It’s a gentle exploration, perfect for photographers keen on capturing the stark beauty of a century-old wreck, or for anyone who enjoys a relaxed potter amongst the remains.
