GUARDIAN ANGEL - Northumberland & Northeast
The *Guardian Angel* off the Northumberland coast is a proper dive, even if it’s on the shallower side. We’re talking about a tugboat, sunk back in the 1960s, and she lies completely upside down in a relatively sheltered spot. The bow points seaward, and the stern is practically nudging the shore, so navigation is simple. What we love about this wreck is how approachable it is, perfect for knocking some rust off your skills or for newer drysuit divers getting used to the chill. You’ll find crabs tucked into every crevice, lobsters peeking out from under twisted metal, and often a decent school of coalfish circling the wreck structure. The visibility can be a bit variable here, as you’d expect from the North Sea, but on a good day, when the sun pierces through the green-blue water, the light plays beautifully on the hull. Our top tip: aim for slack water on a rising tide. The current can pick up, especially if you venture too far from the wreck, but on a calm day, it’s a genuinely relaxing dive. It’s a great example of how quickly the sea reclaims things, turning a navigation hazard into a vibrant, living reef.
