HAWKESBURY - Northumberland & Northeast

The *Hawkesbury* is a proper piece of history, just off the Northumberland coast. We love a good shallow wreck, and this steamship, sunk way back in 1884, really delivers. At only 11 metres, it's perfect for extended bottom times, letting you properly pick your way through the wreckage. You can still make out the bow and stern, despite the years, with twisted metal plates and frames giving shelter to all sorts of critters. Our favourite part is the way the light filters down, illuminating clouds of small fish darting between the ribs of the ship. Look closely and you’ll find plenty of inquisitive wrasse, often peeking out from behind a rusted beam, alongside crabs scuttling over the hull. It’s a gentle dive, generally with decent visibility, but we'd always suggest checking the tides; slack water makes exploring the *Hawkesbury's* scattered remains much more enjoyable. This one's a cracker for anyone keen on wreck history without the pressure of deep diving.
