HELGI WEN - Northumberland & Northeast

The Helgi Wen is a proper North Sea mystery. Not much is known about this yacht, sunk back in the 1970s, making it a bit of an enigma sitting upright on the seabed at 20 metres. We love that feeling of exploring something relatively untouched, a piece of local history waiting to be discovered. Dropping down onto the deck, you’ll find the wreck remarkably intact, almost as if she’s just resting. The wheelhouse is still there, allowing for some great swim-throughs, and the mast stretches up, usually thick with schooling pollock. Look closely for the smaller stuff too: we’ve found some decent nudibranchs here clinging to the railings, and crabs scuttling in the shadows. It’s a dive that rewards slow exploration, peering into every opening. We’d suggest timing your dive for slack water; the currents here can be a bit frisky otherwise, making those tight swim-throughs less enjoyable. Visibility is typical for the North East, so don't expect the tropics, but on a good day, the green light filtering through the mast is quite something. This one is for divers who appreciate a good wreck story and aren't afraid of a bit of chill.
