HIERIVER - Northumberland & Northeast

Hieriver is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to when we’re up in Northumberland, and for good reason. It’s a yacht, a casualty from 1970, and she sits upright on a sandy bottom, about 9m down. The deck is gone, but the hull is remarkably intact, offering plenty of nooks and crannies to poke around in. We love how the light filters through the superstructure on a sunny day, painting the interior in shifting blues and greens. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery here, typical for the North Sea, but on a good day, you can get 5m or more, enough to really appreciate the scale of the wreck. The Hieriver is a fantastic site for newer wreck divers or those wanting a relaxed bimble, and it’s a brilliant photography subject for wide-angle shots. The resident pollack are often curious, hovering just outside the hull, and we’ve seen some huge edible crabs scuttling around inside. It's a proper little artificial reef, and a testament to how quickly marine life reclaims these lost vessels.
