HMS JEWEL - Northumberland & Northeast

The HMS Jewel isn't your grand, intact freighter, but we absolutely love it for what it is: a scattered, accessible piece of wartime history just off the Northumberland coast. Lying in a mere four metres of water, it's a perfect example of how much character a broken wreck can still hold. What you'll find here are the remains of a small drifter, mostly plates and ribs, splayed out on the seabed like fallen dominoes. We always feel a real sense of connection to the past, knowing this vessel was sweeping for mines before it hit one in 1941. We'd suggest a slack water dive, ideally on a sunny day, to really appreciate the visibility and light play. Even though it's shallow, the kelp growth can be surprisingly dense, adding a wonderful, almost ethereal quality to the dive. Look closely among the wreckage; you'll spot plenty of blennies peeking from crevices, and the odd small crab scuttling across a metal plate. Our favourite part? Finding one of the large, circular portholes lying flat, now a home for anemones, a poignant reminder of the Jewel's working life. This site is fantastic for newer divers, or anyone looking for a relaxed dive with a story to tell, without the need for deep technical skills.
