HMS RACEHORSE - Northumberland & Northeast

Forget what the books say about the HMS *Racehorse* wrecking off the Isle of Man. Up here in Northumberland, we’ve got our own *Racehorse*, and she’s a cracker. Sitting in a shallow 10 metres, this is less about penetration and more about appreciating a historical silhouette on the seabed. She was a brig-sloop, and while the wooden structure is long gone, what remains is an easily identifiable keel and frames. We’ve finned over it many times, imagining the original deck plan. The real draw here, for us, is the way the metalwork has become home. Crabs scuttle into every crevice, and the plates are carpeted with dead man's fingers and anemones. Visibility can be a bit variable, as it often is around here, but when it’s good, the light plays beautifully through the water, highlighting the shape of the wreck. This site is perfect for newer divers looking for their first proper wreck, or for anyone who enjoys a leisurely dive exploring history that's been reclaimed by the sea. It’s accessible, full of life, and just feels right.
