HMSM H5 - Northumberland & Northeast

H5 is a proper submarine wreck, and we reckon it’s one of the best you’ll find in UK waters. We’re talking about a real piece of history down there, lying at 54m. Dropping down onto the deck, you immediately get a sense of its scale. The bow points slightly upwards, giving it a defiant look even after all these years. You can poke around the conning tower, which is still remarkably intact, and imagine the crew inside before that fateful collision. We love exploring the torpedo tubes if conditions allow, but you’ll need to be mindful of silt. Visibility can vary, but on a good day, you’ll easily make out the periscopes and parts of the casing. The wreck is heavily encrusted with plumose anemones, their white tentacles swaying gently in the current, creating this beautiful, almost ghostly shroud over the metal. Look closer, and you’ll often spot massive conger eels peering out from gaps, along with wrasse and the occasional ling. It’s a dive for experienced wreck enthusiasts, those who appreciate the silence and the stories these old ships tell.
