HORIZON (POSSIBLY) - Northumberland & Northeast

The Horizon, likely the Horizon, off the Northumberland coast is one of those wrecks that just makes you smile. It’s a fishing vessel, went down in '96, and sits upright at a modest 20 metres. We love how compact it is; you can take in the whole thing on a single dive without feeling rushed. What makes it special? For us, it’s the sense of an instant artificial reef. Given its age and size, it's already well-colonised. Expect to see cod nosing around the wheelhouse, massive edible crabs tucked into crevices, and sometimes a flurry of wrasse darting in and out of the old fishing gear. The bow points slightly to the north, so if you hit it on a day with a bit of a northerly push, you can drift along the port side, taking in the structure as you go. It’s a great dive for newer wreck divers, or anyone who appreciates a self-contained, interesting piece of history. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is in the North Sea, but even on an average day, the wreck itself provides enough focus. Look for the prop, still intact and often shrouded in anenomes.
