JANIE GIRL - Northumberland & Northeast

The Janie Girl, off the Northumberland coast, is one of our absolute favourite deep wrecks. She’s a trawler, sunk in ‘76, sitting upright in a respectable 38 metres. What we love about her is how intact she is – the wheelhouse is still there, and the mast stretches up, usually draped in fishing line, which you need to be mindful of. We've spent many an hour poking around her holds, imagining the last moments of her working life. Visibility here can be a bit of a lottery, sometimes 5 metres, other days you’re seeing the whole stern from the bow. When it's good, it’s brilliant. Plumose anemones blanket the structure, bright white against the dark steel, and the deck often swarms with cod, pollock, and conger eels peeking out from every crevice. We've even spotted a wolf fish or two tucked away. It’s a proper expedition dive, a solid bottom time on mixed gas, but the reward is a genuinely atmospheric wreck that feels like a real piece of history. A dive for those who appreciate a bit of metal and a good hunt for marine life in dimmer conditions.
