JEAN MARCEL - Northumberland & Northeast

The Jean Marcel, off the Northumberland coast, is one of those wrecks we keep coming back to. It’s not about grand scale or pristine structure here, but a real sense of history and the marine life that has made it home. This old fishing trawler, resting at a shallow 14 metres, is perfect for a relaxed dive, especially when the conditions are playing nice. You’ll find the wreck fairly broken up, but its character still shines through, particularly the engine room section which offers some nice penetration for those with the right training and confidence. We love exploring the nooks and crannies where plumose anemones bloom in fluffy white clusters, and you’ll often spot massive edible crabs scuttling over the plates. Conger eels are a regular sight, peeking out from behind collapsed bulkheads, their eyes tracking your progress. Visibility can be hit or miss, as it often is in the North Sea, but on a good day, the light filtering down through the green water gives the wreck an almost ethereal glow. Our tip: aim for slack water on a neap tide for the calmest conditions and best visibility. It’s a great site for newer wreck divers or anyone who just enjoys a leisurely rummage through a piece of maritime history, observing how nature reclaims these sunken structures.
