June Rose - Northumberland & Northeast

The June Rose. Now, this is a wreck that really gets us talking when we’re planning a weekend north. She’s a trawler, sank back in ’90 after a collision, and sits upright in a respectable 26 metres. What we love about her is how intact she remains. You can still make out the wheelhouse, the winches, even the general shape of a working fishing vessel, not just a pile of twisted metal. Dropping down, the first thing you notice is the sheer number of plumose anemones, especially if you catch her in summer. They bloom like white flowers, coating much of the superstructure and giving the wreck a ghostly, ethereal feel in the gloom. We’ve found some decent sized lobsters tucked into crevices around the stern, and every time we’ve visited, there are always plenty of wrasse darting between the deck fittings. Visibility can be a bit of a lottery, as it often is up here, but on a good day, when the light penetrates, it’s genuinely atmospheric. Best for divers comfortable with colder water and decent buoyancy, as there are plenty of snag points if you’re not careful. It’s a proper dive, a rewarding exploration of a working boat now home to the sea.
