L M MERRITY - Northumberland & Northeast

The L.M. Merrity, resting in just 15 metres, feels like a proper piece of maritime history. It’s a sailing vessel, sunk way back in 1887, and for us, that age really comes through. We love how the wooden hull has started to break down, revealing the skeletal ribs – a fantastic silhouette against the greener North Sea light. What you get here is pure atmospheric wreck diving. The old timbers are now completely encrusted with dead man's fingers and anemones, which sway gently with the surge. Look closely, and you’ll spot velvet crabs scuttling amongst the growth and small shoals of cod darting in and out of the deeper sections of the wreck. Entry can be a bit of a bouncy ride depending on the day, but once you’re down, it’s often calmer around the wreck itself. We'd suggest checking the tides; slack water gives you the best chance to really take in the scale and history without fighting a current. It’s a site that rewards a slow, observant dive, perfect for those who appreciate the quiet beauty of an ancient wreck.
