LYNKAR - Northumberland & Northeast

The Lynkar, off the Northumberland coast, is one of our favourite UK wreck dives when the conditions line up. At a maximum depth of 14 metres, it's accessible for most divers, though we'd suggest a little wreck experience under your belt to really make the most of it. This isn't some intact museum piece, mind you. She went down in '71, burnt out, and while the crew were thankfully rescued, the Lynkar herself is a crumpled, scattered affair. What we love about this site is the way the sea has reclaimed her. What’s left of the cabin cruiser is now home to a surprising amount of local life. Look for the glint of small cod darting between twisted metal and the vibrant purple of dead man's fingers clinging to every available surface. It’s a good spot to practise your buoyancy, weaving around the debris, and peering into the darker corners where lobsters often tuck themselves away. On a day with good visibility, perhaps an hour either side of slack water, the light filters down, giving a spooky, atmospheric feel to the burnt-out shell. It's a real insight into the power of the sea and how quickly nature moves in.
