MARGARITA - Northumberland & Northeast

The Margarita is a lovely little wreck, a proper local favourite for a relaxed dive. We’ve always enjoyed her for a chilled afternoon bob, especially when the light is good. Sunk back in ’84, this old fishing vessel is only 16.5 metres long and sits upright in about 8 metres of water. It’s a perfect depth for new wreck divers or those wanting a long bottom time to poke around. You’ll find the wheelhouse still largely intact, a real treat for such a shallow wreck. Sunlight filters through, illuminating the skeletal remains of the deck and drawing your eye to the nooks and crannies where life thrives. Look closely and you’ll spot wrasse darting between encrusting anemones and crabs scuttling across the metal plates. It’s not a huge wreck, so you can easily do a couple of circuits, taking your time to appreciate the detail. Our top tip: go on a calm day with good visibility after a spell of settled weather. It makes all the difference when you can really soak in the atmosphere.
