MARION - Northumberland & Northeast

Okay, let's talk Marion. Forget your typical wreck dive here, because Marion is something else entirely. We’re talking about a wreck so shallow, so easily accessible, that it’s less a dive and more a fascinating snorkel or even just a walk-out at low tide. This 18.9m sailing vessel, grounded and capsized on Great Burbo Bank, sits in literally a meter of water. What makes it a standout for us? It’s the sheer accessibility and the way the sea has reclaimed it. At high tide, a snorkel above the Marion reveals the dark outlines of its timbers, often with small shoals of pollock darting between the frames. Head out at low tide, though, and you can practically walk around the exposed skeleton. The wooden hull, splintered and barnacle-encrusted, tells a story of its own. Look closely and you’ll find crabs scuttling amongst the rotting planks, anemones clinging to any solid surface, and sea snails leaving trails across the dark wood. It’s not about penetration or huge fish, it's about connecting with history and the intertidal zone in a really unique way. Our best advice? Check the tide times, pack some sturdy footwear, and be prepared to get your feet wet.
