MAYFLOWER (PART OF) - Northumberland & Northeast

The Mayflower isn't your deep, dark wreck dive, not by a long shot. This is a swim-through-it-in-your-snorkeling-gear kind of wreck, lying at barely a metre, often exposed at low tide. We love it for how accessible it is, a proper piece of maritime history you can practically walk up to. What’s left of the old sailing vessel, sunk back in 1885, is scattered across the seabed like a forgotten toy box. You'll fin through sections of timbers, ribs, and hull plating, all barnacle-encrusted and fuzzy with seaweed. It's a busy place with crabs scuttling between the gaps and small fish darting for cover. Look closely for the blennies peeking out of crevices. Our favourite time to explore is just as the tide starts to come in, when the water is at its calmest and the light filters through beautifully. It’s a brilliant spot for photographers who want to play with shallow wreck shots or anyone just starting out with wreck exploration without the commitment of deeper water. You’ll be surprised how much character this old girl still has.
