MERMAID (PROBABLY) - Northumberland & Northeast

Let’s be honest, diving in the Northeast can be a bit of a lottery, but the Mermaid (Probably) wreck is one of those sites that consistently delivers. Dropping onto her at 36 metres, she’s a proper barge, well broken up now, but with enough structure to make for a fantastic rummage. We love how the hull plates have twisted and warped, creating little nooks and crannies where you’ll spot plump lobsters waving their feelers, and often a grumpy wolfish peering out from a dark corner. Visibility here, if you get it right, can be surprisingly good, sometimes pushing 10 metres. Our favourite way to dive her is on a slack tide, drifting slowly along the scattered debris field. Keep an eye out for the resident ling, usually lurking deeper in the holds, and the schooling pollack that dance above the main structure. It’s a dive for those who appreciate the history of a wreck, the way the sea reclaims metal, and the tough, resilient marine life of the North Sea. Just be prepared for the chill – it's Northumberland, after all.
