MERRIMAC - Northumberland & Northeast

The Merrimac is a surprising little dive, often overlooked for the bigger wrecks further out. We love it precisely because of its simplicity – a steel barge, not much deeper than 10 metres, making it ideal for longer bottom times and less demanding dives. You’re essentially dropping onto a metal shell, broken in places, with plenty of nooks and crannies for fish to hide. What makes it special for us is the sheer number of blennies and gobies you can spot if you take your time. They’re everywhere, peeking out from every rivet and rust hole. Look closely and you’ll find squat lobsters too, tucked away in the darker recesses. The whole wreck has become a home, coated in a fine layer of green and brown algae, making it blend into the seabed. It’s a gentle introduction to wreck diving, or a perfectly relaxed second dive of the day, allowing you to really slow down and appreciate the small things.
