MHARI L - Northumberland & Northeast

The MHARI L is one of those wrecks that really sticks with you, a poignant reminder of the North Sea’s wild nature. It’s a fishing vessel, relatively small at 17.1m, that went down in 1985 after snagging its trawl on a cable. At 50 metres, it’s a deep dive, making it one for experienced technical divers who appreciate a challenge and a bit of history. What we love about the MHARI L is its intactness, considering the depth and the currents up here. The wheelhouse is still largely there, and you can imagine the final moments. It’s a dark dive, even on a sunny day, with the light filtering down a deep blue, giving everything an almost ethereal glow. Visibility can be a real mixed bag, but when it’s good, you can make out the structure from a distance, rising like a ghost from the seabed. Keep an eye out for conger eels in the deeper sections, and we've often spotted some sizeable ling patrolling the superstructure. It’s a serious dive, but the rewards are an encounter with a piece of maritime history and a unique sense of solitude.
